1982–2007: Early life and career beginnings

Minaj graduated from LaGuardia High School as an actress.

Onika Tanya Maraj was born December 8, 1982^[1] or 1984^[2] in Saint James, a suburb of Trinidad and Tobago's capital city Port of Spain.^[9][10][11] to parents Carol and Robert Maraj, an accounting clerk/gospel singer and an employee at American Express, respectively.^[12] Her parents are of mixed Indian and Afro-Trinidadian ancestry^[13][14] and she lived in Saint James with her grandmother. Minaj is the middle sister to brothers Makiya and Jelani, as mentioned in her song "I'm the Best" on her debut album, Pink Friday.^[15] Her mother would occasionally visit, and one day, when Minaj was five, her mother picked her up to move to the Queens borough of New York City.^[16] According to Minaj, her father drank heavily, took drugs, and once tried to kill her mother by setting the house on fire.^[17]
Minaj attended Elizabeth Blackwell Middle School 210, where she played the clarinet.^[16] She then graduated from LaGuardia High School, which specializes in music and the visual and performing arts.^[18][19] Minaj participated in the drama program and initially planned to sing at LaGuardia, but lost her voice on the day of the audition.^[18][18] Minaj had a passion to become an actress, but failed at attempts to pursue her career due to the lack of roles she received, and agents. In 2001, she was cast in the off-Broadway play, "In Case You Forget".^[20] After her acting career failed to take off, Minaj worked at Red Lobster in the Bronx at the age of 19 as a waitress and purchased her first vehicle, a BMW.^[21] Minaj was fired from Red Lobster because of her discourteousness to customers. She stated she had been fired from "at least fifteen jobs" for similar antics.^[22] Other jobs Minaj held were administrative assistant, customer service, an office manager position at an unknown business located on Wall Street.^[23][24]
After exploring other career options, Minaj rapped in a foursome group called "Hoodstars," which consisted of group members Scaff Beezy, Lou$tar, and 7even Up.^[25] The group recorded the entrance song for WWE wrestler Victoria titled "Don't Mess With," it was featured on the compilation album ThemeAddict: WWE The Music, Vol.6. Minaj left the group, unsatisfied with their lack of success. During this time, Minaj uploaded a few songs on her Myspace profile and sent a few of her songs to people in the music industry. Fendi, CEO of the Brooklyn label Dirty Money Entertainment, who also found rapper Gravy, discovered the music and contacted Minaj, signing her to his label. Initially, Minaj adopted the pseudonym "Nicki Maraj", later changing to "Nicki Minaj", stating "My real name is Maraj. Fendi flipped it when he met me because I had such a nasty flow! I eat bitches!"^[26] Under Fendi's label, Minaj appeared on the popular street DVD "The Come Up Volume 11" that featured underground rappers from New York.

2007–09: Mixtapes and Young Money

Minaj released her first mixtape Playtime Is Over in 2007 with Dirty Money Records. Her second mixtape, Sucka Free, was released on July 7, 2008 under the label Be. She won the Female Artist of the Year award at the 2008 Underground Music Awards shortly after.^[27] On April 18, 2009, Minaj released her third mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty under the label of Trapaholics Records; it received positive coverage on both BET and MTV.^[28][29] She also appeared in XXL magazine during this time.^[30]
In August 2009, Minaj signed a record deal with Young Money Entertainment, with distribution from Universal Motown Records, after fellow American rapper Lil Wayne discovered her on The Come Up DVD.^[30][31] Minaj generated significant attention when she first appeared on Yo Gotti's 5 Star Chick video, which gave her mainstream success with the urban community. At the request of Jay-Z, Minaj was asked to feature on Robin Thicke's single Shakin' It 4 Daddy.^[32] Following the guest appearance, Minaj was given a solo rap verse in the single "BedRock". The record garnered huge commercial success, reaching number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. She also appeared on "Roger That," which charted at number 56. The song, particularly Minaj, received positive reviews from critics.^[33] In December 2009, both songs were included in Young Money Entertainment's debut collaborative studio album We Are Young Money. The album charted in the top ten on the Billboard 200, reaching number 9 and later receiving a Gold Certification by the RIAA. Hoje vamos falar sobre a voz passiva no inglês, pois estamos mais acostumados a usar a forma ativa e acabamos nos confundindo na hora de passar para a passiva. A forma passiva é um recurso que é utilizado para enfatizar a ação e não quem a fez. Para entender melhor a diferença veja os exemplos abaixo:
Voz ativa: Nobody recognized the woman. (Ninguém reconheceu a mulher.)
Voz passiva: The woman was not recognized. (A mulher não foi reconhecida.)
É importante sempre usar by quando mencionado o executor da ação:
Voz ativa: Susan is cooking dinner. (Susan está fazendo o jantar.)
Voz passiva: Dinner is being cooked by Susan. (O jantar está sendo feito por Susan.)
Quando passamos voz ativa para voz passiva ocorrem algumas transformações:
• O objeto da voz ativa torna-se o sujeito da voz passiva.
• O verbo to be é usado no tempo em que estiver o verbo principal na voz ativa.
• O verbo principal é sempre usado no particípio passado na voz passiva.
Voz ativa: Anyone can plant a tree. (Qualquer um pode plantar uma árvore.)
Voz passiva: A tree can be planted by anyone. (Uma árvore pode ser plantada por qualquer um.)
Observação:
Quando o agente da voz passiva não for mencionado e tivermos que passar para a voz ativa, deveremos empregar um sujeito:
Voz passiva: Those ships were destroyed. (Os navios foram destruídos.)

A voz passiva é utilizada para contar o que acontece com os objetos da ação. Ao contrário da voz ativa, que contamos o que o sujeito realiza. Exemplos: Voz ativa: “Joca lavou o carro” (Joca washed the car)
Voz passiva: “O carro foi lavado” (The car was washed)
Na maioria das vezes a voz passiva só é utilizada quando a ação for mais importante do que o sujeito. Exemplos:
- Brazil was discovered in 1500 (O Brasil foi descoberto em 1500, voz passiva)
- Pedro Alvares Cabral discovered Brasil (Pedro A.C. descobriu o Brasil, voz ativa)
O passive voice pode ser utilizado em quase todos os tempos verbais do inglês, exceto o “future progressive” e os “perfect progressive”.

No ano passado, foram US$ 4,89 bilhões…” Com tanto comércio online acontecendo deduzi que mais uma vez o inglês pode vir a fazer falta para quem procura produtos em sites de países de língua inglesa. Nesse primeiro artigo vou me concentrar em vocabulário útil para quem pretende comprar roupas online. Nesse caso é importante, primeiramente, entender a numeração para sapatos. Ela é diferente da brasileira tanto nos Estados Unidos quanto na Europa e isso pode gerar muita confusão. Digamos que você esteja comprando um tênis num site americano e vê a lá o número 5, e fica pensando, será que isso é 35?! Na verdade, como você pode ver na tabela abaixo, o 5 dos Estados Unidos corresponde ao nosso 36. Saudade é a 7ª palavra mais difícil de traduzir

A polêmica que gira em torno da palavra Saudade vem de longa data. Já falei sobre isso aqui no blog, num post que gerou muita discussão. Em inglês, o verbete citado anteriormente, pode ser entendido como miss (sentir falta) ou ainda homesick (sentir-se triste por estar longe de casa e da família). Provavelmente existem diversas outras traduções, mas nenhuma delas têm a capacidade de substituir a palavra saudade com a mesma carga semântica. Posto isso, realmente não há um cognato perfeito. A saída, obviamente, é sempre usar o bom senso e buscar uma palavra com sentido aproximado para a situação.
De acordo com uma lista feita a partir da opinião de mais de 1000 tradutores profissionais, a palavra saudade, em português, é a 7ª palavra mais difícil de traduzir. A lista considera palavras de todos os idiomas. Confira abaixo o ranking:
1. “Ilunga” (tshiluba) – uma pessoa que está disposta a perdoar quaisquer maus-tratos pela primeira vez, a tolerar o mesmo pela segunda vez, mas nunca pela terceira vez.
2. “Shlimazl” (ídiche) – uma pessoa cronicamente azarada.
3. “Radioukacz” (polonês) – pessoa que trabalhou como telegrafista para os movimentos de resistência o domínio soviético nos países da antiga Cortina de Ferro.
4. “Naa” (japonês) – palavra usada apenas em uma região do país para enfatizar declarações ou concordar com alguém.
5. “Altahmam” (árabe) – um tipo de tristeza profunda.
6. “Gezellig” (holandês) – aconchegante.
7. Saudade (português)
8. “Selathirupavar” (tâmil, língua falada no sul da Índia) – palavra usada para definir um certo tipo de ausência não-autorizada frente a deveres.
9. “Pochemuchka” (russo) – uma pessoa que faz perguntas demais.
10. “Klloshar” (albanês) – perdedor.

 Hey there! How are you doing? Bom, nosso assunto de hoje é a pronúncia do passado terminado em ED (verbos regulares). Durante meus anos de magistério vejo que esse é um problema recorrente e muitos cursos (franquias e não-franquias) simplesmente ignoram o estudo da pronúncia nesse caso tão comum. Vou dar algumas regrinhas aqui, bem simples e sem entrar em termos técnicos:
1. Verbos terminados em p – k – s – ch – sh – f – x têm o som ED com a pronúncia de /t/.

• Look – looked
• Miss – missed
• Stop – stopped
• Work – worked
• Touch – touched
• Push – pushed
• Stuff – stuffed

2. Verbos terminados em som de l – n – m – r – b – v – g – w – y – z e terminados em ditongos têm o som de ED com a pronúncia de /d/

• Call – called
• Live – lived
• Clean – cleaned
• Perform – performed
• Repair – repaired
• Tag – tagged
• Allow – allowed
• Cry – cried
• Buzz – buzzed

3. Verbos terminados em T e D, têm o som /id/.

• End – ended
• Add – added
• Hunt – hunted
• Need – needed
• Fold – folded
• Sound – sounded
• Count – counted

Escute a pronúncia:
DICA: De agora em diante, preste bastante atenção quando for fazer algum exercício de audição (na sua aula de inglês, assistindo filme, ouvindo música, etc.) e aparecerem verbos regulares no passado. Ser mais analítico e ouvir mais de perto a pronúncia compensa, just take it on trust!

One Direction are a British-Irish boy band formed in London in 2010, consisting of members Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. They signed to Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records after being formed and placing third in the seventh series of British television music competition The X Factor. They later signed in North America to Columbia Records.

One Direction have been described as sparking a resurgence in the boy band concept, and of forming part of a new "British Invasion" in the United States. As of June 2012, according to Nick Gatfield, the chairman and chief executive of Sony Music Entertainment UK, One Direction represent a $50 million business empire.^[2] Their work has earned them awards and nominations. One Direction have supported various charities and foundations, and have commercial endorsements with Pokémon, Nokia, HarperCollins and Hasbro. They also appeared as themselves in the iCarly episode "iGo One Direction"

History

Formation and record deal (2010–11)

In 2010, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson auditioned as solo candidates for the seventh series of British television music competition The X Factor.^[3] Failing to progress to the "Boys" category at "judges' houses", after a suggestion by guest judge Nicole Scherzinger,^[3] they were put together to form a five-piece boy band at Wembley Arena, London, England, July 2010, during the "bootcamp" stage of the competition,^[4] thus qualifying for the "Groups" category. Subsequently, the group got together for two weeks to get to know each other and to practise.^[5][6] Styles came up with the name One Direction as he thought it would sound good when The X Factor announcer Peter Dickson read their name out on the live shows.^[5] For their qualifying song at judges' houses, and their first song as a group, One Direction sang an acoustic version of "Torn".^[7] The group quickly gained popularity in the UK.^[8] One Direction finished in third place behind runner-up Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt Cardle.^[9] Immediately after the final, their song "Forever Young", which would have been released if they had won The X Factor, was leaked onto the internet.^[9] Shortly afterwards it was confirmed, One Direction had been signed by Cowell to a £2 million Syco Records record contract.^[10][11] Recording for their debut album began in January 2011, as they flew to Los Angeles to work with producer RedOne.^[12] In February 2011, One Direction and nine other contestants from the series participated in the X Factor Live Tour.^[13] The tour saw the group performing for 500,000 people throughout the UK.^[14] After the tour concluded in April 2011, the group continued working on their debut album,^[12] recording took place in Sweden, UK, and the United States, as One Direction worked with producers Carl Falk, Savan Kotecha, Steve Mac, and Rami Yacoub, among others.^[15][16]
